Jury sides with Wisconsin woman in medical malpractice suit

A Wisconsin woman was recently awarded a $25.3 million jury verdict for medical malpractice. The victim had her arms and legs amputated after medical providers failed to diagnose her properly. A patient who has been injured from the poor choices of their physician has the right to pursue a medical malpractice claim for financial damages.

Reportedly, the woman suffered from an undetected case of Strep A, which eventually developed and caused her body to go into septic shock. The incident occurred after she was released from an extended emergency room visit, without antibiotics or information regarding a potential infection. The next day she went into shock. The infection that raged through her body ultimately required that her extremities be removed.

A person that has suffered such severe injuries likely requires permanent and expensive medical treatment. The victim's husband was awarded $1.5 million of the settlement for loss of companionship, and she was awarded $15 million for her personal pain and suffering. The remaining amount awarded is intended to cover lifetime medical costs and other necessary expenses that have accrued.

The suit accused a doctor and the physician’s assistant of failing to provide an additional medical diagnosis that would have permitted the victim to seek additional treatment for her illness. The Wisconsin victim may have felt a mixture of emotions as she came to terms with the damages she had suffered. A person who is a victim of medical malpractice may also choose to seek help in pursuing restitution for the injuries they have experienced. A successful claim will require proof that the plaintiff suffered serious injuries as the result of the medical malpractice of a doctor and/or other healthcare provider.
