Woman claims medical malpractice caused paralysis; jury agrees

There are many skilled professionals in Wisconsin who work in the medical field. They have received proper training and have adequate experience that allows them to respond appropriately to a variety of different scenarios. Unfortunately, even the most skilled professionals can make mistakes when overworked and fatigued. One out-of-state woman claims that such fatigue resulted in medical malpractice, causing her lifelong problems.

The woman was admitted to the hospital in 2009 to deliver her third child. A doctor who was reportedly finishing a 24-hour shift administered her spinal epidural. She argues that because of his fatigue, he inserted the epidural into the wrong portion of her back, causing it to strike part of her spinal column and causing a cystic lesion.

The woman claims that her life has been irrevocably altered as a result of the incident. Court papers indicate that she suffers from leg damage, chronic pain and paralysis. A jury recently agreed with her claims of medical malpractice and awarded her over $4 million.

Unfortunately, the woman may have to live with the ramifications of the medical malpractice for the rest of her life. The award will likely help her and her family handle medical bills created by the incident as well as help them cope with loss of wages. Many people in Wisconsin who have also suffered due to the negligence of a medical care provider have also turned to the civil court system for relief. Such action could result in an award of damages and protect future patients from suffering in a similar manner.
